about

by Olivier Messiaen
(The Children of God"
To all who have received it, the Word has given the power to become children of God. And God instills in their hearts the Spirit of his children, who cry: Abba! Father!

V. Les Enfants de Dieu is written relying entirely on harmonic means for its effect, taking no account of rhythmic systems or polymodal complexities. It opens and closes on a B major chord with an added sixth. The first section depicts our power to become God’s children. We hear a modified French organ toccata which builds until it reaches the climax of “Abba! Father!” when we recognize God’s grace. The second section is the receiving of this power into our hearts. This latter part tells us that if we receive God within us, we will become his children, carrying out the purpose for which we have been brought into this world. If we imagine the piece as a summer thunderstorm, we hear it brewing through the first section, erupting into thunder and lightening, then finally settling into calm – leaving us aware that there is a power far greater than we ourselves! As a performer, there is an incredible physical sensation that always occurs as I play the final section of this movement. It is eleven slow measures of a diminuendo – a prayer that goes further and further out into the universe. The final B major chord, with its added 6th, is a sound that I feel loathe to release! Such is the beauty of that finality.
